Guide

Should you sell on your own website or on a marketplace?

Use a marketplace when you need buyers you cannot reach yet, and your own website when you want to keep the margin and the customer. Marketplaces take a commission on every sale, often with a monthly fee on top: Uber Eats takes 30% when its couriers deliver. Your own site takes no commission, but nobody arrives unless you bring them. Most growing businesses end up using both.

Part 01

What marketplaces charge

Every marketplace prices differently, and several are running promotions, so check the current rate card for your category before you decide.

Uber Eats, Uber delivers
30% commission, 33% on Uber One orders
Uber Eats, you deliver or customer collects
14% commission
Amazon.co.za, Professional plan
R400 a month, excl. VAT (R1 on promotion until 31 March 2027)
Amazon.co.za, referral fees
8% to 20% by category, excl. VAT (5% on promotion until 31 March 2027)

Part 02

The same R500 sale, five ways

Fees are easier to judge in Rands. On a single R500 sale, a 30% commission costs R150 and a 15% referral fee costs R75. On your own site, a PayFast card payment costs R18 plus VAT, Ozow pay by bank costs R7.50, and a bank transfer with a reference costs nothing.

Part 03

What you give up besides the fee

The customer. On a marketplace the buyer is the marketplace's customer, and you usually cannot contact them again. You are also listed next to your competitors, and the rules, fees and ranking can change without warning.

Part 04

When a marketplace is the right call

When you are testing whether anyone wants the product before spending on a site. When customers in your trade expect to order through an app, as they do for food delivery. And when the marketplace brings buyers you could not afford to reach any other way.

Part 05

When your own site wins

When customers come back, because every repeat order on a marketplace pays the commission again. When your products need explaining, which a marketplace listing does badly. And when the margin cannot carry 15% to 30%. Citrus Aura sells handmade products from its own store, with nationwide delivery and a checkout that costs nothing per sale.
